2018 Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat’s fears have come true, as the Wrestling Federation of India blocked her way to the 2026 edition of the tournament by declaring that the upcoming event in Gonda won’t serve as a selection trial for the Asian Games.

Under the revised rules, only athletes who bagged medals in competitions held in 2025 and 2026 are eligible for the selection trials. This excludes Vinesh, as she hasn’t taken part in any professional event since her devastating disqualification at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Vinesh had expressed concerns that the Wrestling Federation of India was trying to hinder her return to the domestic circuit. She alleged that the federation couldn’t respond when she attempted to register for the National Open Ranking Tournament.

“I am hoping to make a comeback at the National Open Ranking Tournament. The registration for it was open till April 30. But when I tried to register, the portal says it is now closed,” Vinesh said.

After Vinesh raised her concerns, the WFI processed her registration on the final day of the deadline. WFI president Sanjay Singh denied any wrongdoing, stating that her registration had already been completed, although it was only created after her complaint came to light.

“I intended to compete at the Federation Cup too, but the team selection criteria were changed at the last minute, so I could not take part. It feels like this is a deliberate attempt to stop me from competing, especially since this is an important tournament to remain in contention for the Asian Games and World Championship selection trials,” Vinesh said.

The WFI’s latest announcement seems to validate Vinesh’s concerns. The federation has limited eligibility to medalists from specific events held in 2025 and 2026, while also clarifying that earlier performances will not be taken into account.
