Following progress at the Mumbai station, construction at the Virar bullet train station in Maharashtra has achieved a significant milestone with the casting of the first of nine large concrete slabs. These slabs measure 50 metres in length, 35.32 metres in width, and 300 mm in thickness, utilising 1,555 cubic metres of concrete, as per an official statement released on Wednesday.
This development is a crucial step in the progress of the Virar station, which is part of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor.
The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) confirmed, “There will be nine such slabs at this level, forming the base for track laying works at the station.”
The Virar station will feature two levels—Concourse and Rail—with a total platform length of 425 metres. It will include four tracks, flanked by two platforms on each side.
The design of the station is inspired by its hillside location, with an exterior that reflects the flow of mountain winds.
Progress in Maharashtra
Last month, News18 reported that construction across all four high-speed railway stations in Maharashtra is advancing rapidly.
The most complex station, the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai, is taking shape 100 feet below ground level, making it the deepest station on the route.
Bullet train project
This is India’s first bullet train project, connecting the financial cities of Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
The 508-km project includes 12 stations—four in Maharashtra (Mumbai, Thane, Virar, and Boisar) and eight in Gujarat (Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati). BKC in Mumbai is the only underground station on the route.
Gujarat leads in construction
In comparison to Maharashtra, Gujarat has made more substantial progress, with construction nearing completion at several stations.
Last week, Gujarat home minister Harsh Sanghvi announced that 300 km of viaduct work near Surat is complete, following the successful launch of a 40-metre full-span box girder.
He added that India’s first bullet train station in Surat is nearly ready. Trial runs are scheduled for next year, with full passenger service expected by 2029.

Awaiting final timeline
In March, the Ministry of Railways informed the Lok Sabha that the final timeline for the project can only be determined once all associated civil, electrical, signalling, telecommunication, and rolling stock works are completed.
