Orlando Gill produced two stunning saves in the penalty shootout on Monday (June 29) to help Paraguay secure a memorable victory over Germany in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match. The triumph at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough on Monday (Tuesday IST) marked Paraguay’s second-ever FIFA World Cup knockout victory, including wins decided by penalty shootouts.

Despite their defeat to Ecuador in the final group-stage match, Germany entered the contest as favourites but failed to overcome the resilient South American side.

Gill denied Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade from the spot, but Paraguay squandered two opportunities to seal the shootout before José Canale blasted home the decisive penalty after Jonathan Tah had sent his effort over the crossbar.

Who is Orlando Gill?

Orlando Gill is a 26-year-old goalkeeper who represents Paraguay in international football and plays for San Lorenzo de Almagro at club level. He has made 10 appearances for Paraguay so far, and in his 10th international match, he helped his side secure a memorable FIFA World Cup knockout victory.

During the 2026 season, Gill made 15 league appearances for San Lorenzo de Almagro in the Argentine Primera División and featured in 22 matches across all competitions.

Before joining San Lorenzo de Almagro on loan on December 30, 2023, he made a handful of appearances for Sportivo San Lorenzo in the Paraguayan Primera División in 2020.

At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Gill started all three of Paraguay’s Group D matches and kept two clean sheets. He conceded four goals in Paraguay’s tournament opener against the United States at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood but did not concede in the following two group-stage matches against Turkey and Australia.

First-ever defeat in penalty shoot out Germany

Germany crashed out of the World Cup at the hands of Paraguay in the last 32 after losing 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. It marks the first time that Germany have ever lost a penalty shootout at a World Cup.

The defeat against Paraguay marked another premature exit for Germany who were playing in their first knockout-stage appearance since winning the 2014 World Cup.

Paraguay celebrated arguably their greatest win at the tournament, but they face the daunting prospect of running into an in-form France next should Les Bleus beat Sweden.
