1 Killed, Four Injured As Old Unexploded Shell Goes Off Near LoC In Kashmir’s Gulmarg

A civilian was killed and four others were injured after an old unexploded shell detonated near the Asha Post in the Sumli Wali Dhok area of Gulmarg in north Kashmir on Friday, officials said.
The blast occurred in an area close to the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan, where unexploded ordnance from past cross-border shelling is occasionally found.
According to initial reports, the explosion took place near Asha Post, which falls under the jurisdiction of Gulmarg Police Station. Officials believe the blast was triggered by an old unexploded shell.
The deceased has been identified as Zabir Ahmad Bajad, son of Mohammad Rafiq Bajad, a resident of Galibal in Chandoosa, Baramulla district. He died on the spot.
Four other persons sustained injuries in the explosion and were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their condition was not immediately known.
Security forces and police personnel rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. A probe has been launched to ascertain the circumstances under which the unexploded shell detonated.
The area lies close to the LoC, where remnants of mortar shells and other unexploded explosives from previous military exchanges are occasionally discovered, posing a risk to civilians.
In a statement, Jammu and Kashmir Police said the incident occurred at around 3 pm, when Zubair Ahmad Bajjad reportedly came into contact with an old explosive object in a remote behak (high-altitude pasture) in the upper reaches of Baramulla.
Police said inquest proceedings have been initiated, while specialist bomb disposal teams are sanitising the area to ensure no unexploded ordnance remains. A detailed investigation into the incident is also underway.
The area lies close to the LoC, where remnants of mortar shells and other unexploded explosives from previous military exchanges are occasionally discovered, posing a continuing risk to civilians venturing into remote grazing areas.
