SRINAGAR: Security forces early Monday thwarted an infiltration attempt and killed two terrorists along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district. A huge cache of war-like stores was recovered from the gun battle site along with the body of one of the slain terrorists. Later that evening, an encounter broke out in the district’s Surankote tehsil during an anti-terror operation. A fierce gunfight continued till the time of going to press.
“In a joint operation by alert troops of the Indian Army and J&K Police, a major infiltration bid was foiled in Poonch’s Krishna Ghati sector,” Jammu-based defence spokesperson Lt Col Suneel Bartwal said. “On spotting terrorists moving from across the LoC towards the Indian side near the Poonch river late Sunday night, the joint team of security forces established a multi-tier anti-infiltration grid to prevent any terrorist from escaping,” the spokesperson said.
Contact was established with the terrorists early Monday, leading to a fierce exchange of fire. “In the ensuing gunfight, two terrorists were hit. One of them fell on the spot while another was seen falling into the river,” Lt Col Bartwal said. During a subsequent search operation, security forces recovered the body of one of the slain terrorists along with war-like stores including an AK-74 rifle with magazine, 11 rounds and other assorted items for sustenance, he added.
Meanwhile in Surankote, a gun battle began when a joint team of the Army and J&K Police’s Special Operations Group, based on intelligence inputs, launched a cordon-and-search operation at Sindarah and Maidana to trace holed-up terrorists. Terming the encounter as “Operation Trinetra 2”, Army’s While Knight Corps tweeted: “Contact established. Intense firefight ongoing, area cordoned, operations in progress.”
Operation Trinetra was launched in May in the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch after two terrorist attacks on the Army in the region. In the first attack, terrorists ambushed an Army vehicle at Bhatta Dhurian in Poonch on April 20 in which five jawans were killed. In the second attack in Rajouri’s Kesari Hill on May 5, five elite Army commandos were killed while one terrorist was shot dead. From the site of that gunfight, security forces had recovered an AK-56 rifle, four AK-56 magazines, 56 AK rounds, one 9mm pistol with magazine, three grenades and an ammunition pouch.
Under Operation Trinetra, a terror module was busted in Rajouri-Poonch on June 14 and eight suspects were arrested. ADGP (Jammu Zone) Mukesh Singh had then tweeted: “The police and other security forces in Rajouri-Poonch range cracked major narco-terror modules with the recovery of 44.47kg heroin and some weapons including one AK-47 Rifle, two pistols, eight grenades and 13.2 lakh cash.”
