NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met and congratulated India’s Paralympic team at his residence for their remarkable performance at the Paris Games, where they secured a record 29 medals.
In a video released by the sports ministry, the Prime Minister is seen interacting with the medal winners, including notable athletes like Avani Lekhara and Kapil Parmar.
Sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Paralympic Committee of India head Devendra Jhajharia were also present.

Avani, a shooter who won gold in the women’s 10m air rifle (SH1), and Kapil Parmar, a visually impaired judoka and India’s first Paralympic medalist in the sport, were among those who met with the Prime Minister.
Parmar had his medal signed by PM Modi.
India’s Paralympic team delivered its best-ever performance, winning seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze medals, surpassing the 19 medals won at the Tokyo Games three years ago.

The team of 84 athletes achieved several firsts, including medals in track events and a gold in archery, won by Harvinder Singh.

Upon their return, the government honored the athletes. Sports minister Mandaviya awarded Rs 75 lakh to gold medalists, Rs 50 lakh to silver medalists, and Rs 30 lakh to bronze medalists.
Those in mixed team events, like Sheetal Devi, who won bronze with Rakesh Kumar, received Rs 22.5 lakh.
