Aruna Irani says Mehmood’s wife stopped him from working with her as their affair rumours were at their peak post ‘Bombay To Goa’ | Hindi Movie News – Times of India
Aruna Irani is known for her dance numbers and vamp roles in Bollywood, but the actress’ notable work and screen presence cannot be denied. The actress had a great assocition with legendary actor Mehmood, known for his comedy in the 60s and 70s and happened to do many films with him. That led to rumours of their affair and there were also speculations that they were secretly married.In a recent interview, Aruna Irani steered clear of those and confessed that they were just good friends and he was more like her ‘guru’.
She said during a chat with Zoom, “We did a lot of films together. We were very good friends, hum bahut acche dost thay (we were very good friends). At that time Mumtaz became a heroine and Shubha Khote got married. The makers called girls to work opposite him and they selected me. Usually, it takes time to get tuning right in comedy. Comedy is difficult but I learnt a lot from him. He was my guru, he taught me timing.”
Aruna admitted that later when Mehmood cast her for ‘Bombay To Goa’ co-starring Amitabh Bachchan, these rumours were at their peak. “Two of my films — Caravan and Bombay To Goa — both were running in theatres and both were jubilee and I got a lot of praise for them… But I didn’t get work (afterwards). And this was because there were rumours that I had married Mehmood. But there was nothing like that. We also were fools not to clear it out. We should have called the media and cleared it. We were friends but nothing else and because of that rumour my track got changed in the Hindi film industry.”
The actress confessed that Mehmood’s wife told him to not work with Aruna. She asked him to cast any other actress but not her. The actress said, that he told her, ‘bohot jhagde ho rahe hai, isiliye hum kaam nahi kar sakte,’ and Aruna was okay with it. “Prabhu ne phir doosre raaste khol diye (God opened more doors then for me),” said Aruna.
Aruna later got married to director Kuku Kohli.
