Indian GM D Gukesh posted his first win of the World Chess Championship 2024 final against holder Ding Liren on Wednesday in Game 3 of the series in Singapore.

The third installment of the final finished in favour of the Indian teenager as Liren ran out the clock following some incessant pressure from Gukesh.

With the win, Gukesh managed to tie the 14-match-final series at 1.5 points each.

The game witnessed some incredible chess as Liren and Gukesh challenged each other’s moves in strategic fashion.

Liren fell nearly an hour behind on the clock after the opening sequence of the game as Gukesh, playing with white pieces on the day, took the game to the Chinese champion.

Liren was put under a lot of pressure by the Indian teenager but managed to stabilise towards midgame. However, his mismanagement of time caught up ultimately as the Chinese 32-year-old was left at a loss for time towards the end of the match and was left scrambling as Gukesh clinched the game.

Liren opened the summit clash with a win on Day 1 of the event as he stunned the challenger by playing with black pieces to get off the mark on his first try in the finals series.

Gukesh broke his duck with a draw on the second day of the championship clash as he secured a draw with both players shaking hands and opting to share the spoils.

Gukesh capitalised on the confidence from the draw to come roaring out of the gates on Wednesday as he opened with d4 instead of the traditional e4, which proved to be successful.

Liren dug a hole for himself as he advanced his bishop far into the enemy territory and left it hanging at the mercy of the Indian after the champion had offered a queen exchange early in the game.

The series will resume on Friday following a rest day on Thursday.
