A youth fell into an open drain in Delhi’s Rohini on Tuesday evening, prompting authorities to launch a rescue operation to trace the missing person, said officials.
It comes days after a biker died after plunging into an uncovered construction pit in West Delhi’s Janakpuri.
According to the Delhi Fire Service, Tuesday’s incident took place in Sector 32 of Rohini, near the Mahashakti Kali Temple, within the Begumpur police station area.
Delhi Police and multiple rescue teams were rushed to the spot soon after receiving information and launched an intensive search operation.
Officials said efforts are ongoing to locate the youth, who is believed to have fallen into the open drain.
Further details about the victim are awaited, and authorities said the rescue operation is underway.
The incident has again brought focus on safety lapses around open drains and construction sites across the capital, particularly following the recent death of Kamal Dhyani in Janakpuri.
Dhyani, an assistant manager at the Rohini branch of HDFC Bank, died after he and his motorcycle plunged into a deep construction pit dug by the Delhi Jal Board for sewer work.
The pit was reportedly left inadequately secured at the time of the accident.
Three engineers were suspended in connection with the incident, and the state government assured strict action against the contractor executing the project.
Residents in the area had alleged that the stretch where Dhyani fell was poorly lit and lacked warning signs, barricades or protective mesh before the accident.
The safety measures were put in place only after the fatal incident.
