How India Changed Under PM Narendra Modi: 10 Major Achievements In 12 Years
From sanitation and banking to digital payments and defence exports, India has undergone major changes over the past 12 years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Marking his 12th anniversary in office, here’s a look at some of the key milestones and how various sectors have evolved during this period.

India’s rural sanitation coverage has risen from 39% in 2014 to 100% in 2025. Over 12 crore individual toilets have been built under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), significantly improving access to sanitation across villages.

Access to piped drinking water has grown dramatically. Rural households with tap water connections increased from 15.64% in May 2019 to 81.87% in June 2025. Twenty-seven lakh villages have also achieved ODF Plus status under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

LPG connections have more than doubled over the past 12 years. From 14.52 crore connections in 2014, the number has risen to 33.39 crore in 2026, aided by schemes such as Ujjwala Yojana.

Financial inclusion has expanded rapidly through Jan Dhan accounts. From 17.8 crore accounts in 2015, the number crossed 58.2 crore in 2026, with more than half belonging to women.

The Ayushman Bharat scheme, launched in 2018, has issued nearly 43.93 crore health cards. The programme aims to provide affordable healthcare protection to economically vulnerable families.

Digital payments have transformed daily transactions. Monthly UPI transactions increased from 2014 levels to over 2,100 crore transactions worth ₹29.52 lakh crore by 2026, making India a global leader in real-time payments.

India’s highway network has expanded considerably. The total length increased from around 91,000 km in 2014 to over 1.46 lakh km in 2026, representing a growth of more than 60%.

India’s aviation sector has grown with operational airports increasing from 74 in 2014 to 164 in 2026. The number of airports has more than doubled, improving connectivity across the country.

India’s defence exports have seen remarkable growth. From ₹686 crore in 2014, exports touched ₹38,424 crore in 2026, making them more than 50 times higher than a decade ago.

India’s GDP has expanded from around $2 trillion in 2014 to an estimated $4.2 trillion in 2026, reflecting the country’s growing economic footprint on the global stage.
