Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday congratulated students after the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, adding that the government must start listening to the people and punish those behind violence against students.

His remarks came after Dharmendra Pradhan stepped down as Education Minister on Saturday amid heightened fury over the recent paper leak controversy surrounding the May 3 NEET-UG examination. His resignation was the key demand of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which led a massive protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over the last month.

Addressing a press conference, Rahul Gandhi said, “First of all, this is the victory of our students. This is the future of India. The education system, which used to be our pride, the whole world acknowledged that the education system of India is very good. It has been under attack for years. It is being captured, it is being privatised. This was a reaction to that.”

He also described Pradhan as a “symbol of corruption and destruction” in the education system and had to leave. “It is good that he left. But now the government will have to take concrete steps to change the education system.”
