Bengaluru’s first summer showers wreaked havoc, leaving at least seven people dead and two injured after a compound wall near Bowring Hospital collapsed during heavy rain and strong winds. The sudden storm, accompanied by hail and gusty winds, caused widespread damage across the city, uprooting trees, flooding key roads, and disrupting normal life in several neighbourhoods.

The tragedy occurred when nine people—mostly pedestrians and roadside vendors—had taken shelter under tarpaulin sheets near the compound wall to escape the rain. The wall suddenly gave way, crushing those standing nearby. The victims’ bodies were shifted to the mortuary, while two injured persons are currently undergoing treatment. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah spoke to hospital authorities immediately after the incident and later rushed to the spot along with the Police Commissioner and senior officials. Sources said the Chief Minister is likely to announce ex-gratia for the families of the deceased and has reportedly pulled up officials over the lapse, noting that the collapsed wall belonged to a government building.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar cancelled his scheduled programme in Kanakapura and rushed to the site after being informed about the incident. “I am cancelling my programme and rushing to the spot. The Police Commissioner has informed me. We will extend all possible help to the affected families,” he said.

The heavy showers, which brought temporary relief from rising temperatures, also triggered widespread damage across the city. In HSR Layout, strong winds ripped off roof sheets, sending tin sheets flying into the air, while several trees were uprooted in different areas. In Jayanagar, a large tree collapsed onto parked vehicles, crushing multiple two-wheelers and damaging a bus.

Major waterlogging was reported in several low-lying areas, with the Basavanagudi underpass completely submerged after the intense downpour. Even the iconic Vidhana Soudha was not spared, as rainwater entered multiple government offices, including the office of the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council. Officials were seen scrambling to clear water as files, computers and furniture were damaged.

In Lavelle Road, a portion of the road caved in following the heavy rain, raising concerns about ongoing pipeline works in the area. Meanwhile, a prominent bookstore in the city reported significant losses after floodwaters entered its premises, with estimates suggesting 4,000 to 5,000 books may have been destroyed due to waterlogging.

The incident quickly triggered political reactions, with BJP state president BY Vijayendra blaming the Congress government for the wall collapse. In a statement, he alleged that the tragedy occurred due to the failure to maintain an old wall and questioned the state’s preparedness for the monsoon season. He demanded accountability from the government, proper treatment for the injured, and compensation for the families of the deceased, while urging immediate repair of dilapidated structures across the city.

The sudden and destructive summer storm has once again exposed Bengaluru’s vulnerability to heavy rain, raising serious concerns about infrastructure safety, drainage preparedness, and maintenance of ageing public structures as the city heads into the monsoon season.
