When the pressure dial hits red, even the toughest can wobble — and that’s exactly what unfolded for Bianca Andreescu on a dramatic Saturday.

The Canadian star, fresh off a grueling three-hour, 38-minute battle against Yulia Putintseva, found herself in a knife-edge third-set tiebreak.

But just when Canada needed nerves of steel, things slipped away cruelly.

Trailing 4-6 in the breaker, Andreescu misfired on her first serve. But what followed was worse.

A nervy, wayward second serve that resulted in a double fault, abruptly ending both the match and Canada’s hopes in the tie.

The 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(4) defeat sealed a 3-1 victory for Kazakhstan, sending them through to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in September.

A Tie That Swung on Fine Margins

Putintseva had earlier given Kazakhstan the perfect start, beating Kayla Cross 6-3, 7-5. Andreescu responded with authority, levelling the tie by defeating Sonja Zhiyenbayeva 6-4, 7-6(4).

But the momentum shifted again in doubles. The Kazakh duo of Anna Danilina and Zhibek Kulambayeva proved too strong, brushing aside Andreescu and Cross 7-5, 6-1 to move within touching distance of qualification.

That set the stage for Andreescu’s decisive clash with Putintseva, and ultimately, the heartbreaking finish.

Pride Amid Pain

Despite the loss, there was no shortage of fight from the Canadian camp. Captain Marie-Eve Pelletier praised her team’s resilience.

“They faced a very strong team, and I loved how the girls competed out there,” she said. “It wasn’t the result we wanted, but I’m incredibly proud of the fight and heart they showed.”

Andreescu, too, chose perspective over frustration.

“I’m really proud of the way I played and how we showed up as a team… sometimes, that’s tennis,” she reflected.
