Bypoll Live Updates 2026: Voting is set to begin at 7 am on Tuesday, in byelections to five Assembly seats and one Lok Sabha constituency across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Assam. Polling will continue until 6 pm, with counting of votes scheduled for Friday, October 9.
The Assembly seats going to polls are Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal, Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu, and Thattanchavady in Puducherry. Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha seat will also vote today.
The byelections were necessitated by vacancies arising after the 2026 Assembly elections and subsequent changes involving elected representatives. In Nandigram, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari won two seats and retained Bhabanipur, leaving the constituency vacant. The Nagaon Lok Sabha seat fell vacant after Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned and joined the BJP.
The contests will be closely watched for their political significance following major changes in the four regions. Nandigram remains a high-profile seat in West Bengal, while Nagaon is witnessing a three-way contest involving the BJP, Congress and AIUDF. In Tamil Nadu, Madurantakam and Dharapuram are being watched amid the growing presence of actor-politician Vijay’s TVK.
