Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with West Bengal hill representatives in Siliguri and discussed demands for a distinct identity, constitutional recognition.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday chaired a meeting in Siliguri with political leaders, community representatives and other stakeholders from the hill areas of West Bengal. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, along with senior representatives of the Centre and the state government, was also present.

The meeting focused on issues concerning the hill population and various demands raised by representatives from the region.

During the meeting, representatives raised demands relating to a distinct identity, a Permanent Political Solution and recognition under the Constitution of India.

Shah assured the participants that the Centre would work towards a Permanent Political Solution soon under the umbrella of the Constitution of India. He also said other demands of the community would be considered sympathetically.

The Home Minister further said that adequate funding from the Centre would help address the pending issues concerning the hill areas.

Committee To Finalise Agreement Modalities

The meeting also decided to constitute a committee under Pankaj Kumar Singh, former Deputy National Security Advisor and the current interlocutor.

The committee will work on finalising the modalities and details of an agreement aimed at providing a Permanent Political Solution for the people of the hill areas of West Bengal under the Constitution of India.

Meeting Concludes On Cordial Note

Political representatives and leaders from various organisations attended the meeting, including MPs Raju Bista and Harshvardhan Singla, Minister for Hills Bishal Lama, GJM leader Bimal Gurung, GNLF leader Mann Ghising, and several MLAs and community leaders.

The meeting concluded on a cordial note, with representatives thanking Amit Shah and Suvendu Adhikari for their approach during the discussions.
