At least eight people, including four children, were injured after a gunman opened fire at a family barbecue during Fourth of July celebrations in New York City’s Coney Island neighbourhood late on Saturday night.
According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the shooting took place at around 10:35 pm on West 30th Street, not far from the Coney Island boardwalk where a fireworks display had concluded less than an hour earlier.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the victims were gathered in a courtyard for a family barbecue when an unidentified man, dressed in black and wearing a ski mask, approached the fence and fired multiple rounds before fleeing the scene on foot.
The victims included four children between the ages of six and 14, along with four adults. All were taken to nearby hospitals. Seven people are in stable condition, while a 21-year-old woman, who was shot in the chest, remains in critical condition.
Police recovered a pistol with an extended magazine and multiple shell casings from the scene, but no arrests have been made so far. Authorities are investigating whether the attack is linked to a recent gang-related homicide reported on the same block.
“There is no place in our city for this kind of violence,” New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said, adding that authorities would use “every tool” available to bring those responsible to justice.
