Iran has discovered more than 7.5 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas, months after its energy sector was seriously disrupted by the war with the US and Israel.

Around 5.7 tcf of the newly discovered gas in Iran’s southern Fars province is recoverable, Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad told state television on Sunday. He said the recoverable reserves are equivalent to around 15 years of production from one phase of South Pars, the world’s largest gas field, which Iran shares with Qatar.

The discovery also includes gas condensates worth “tens of billions of dollars”, Paknejad said. He added that Iran plans to develop the newly discovered resources “as soon as possible”.

Production Could Still Be Years Away

Despite the scale of the discovery, any commercial production is likely to take years. Even before the war, Iran’s energy industry was facing major challenges due to Western sanctions, under-investment and power cuts.

The country’s energy infrastructure was further affected by attacks that began in late February. The strikes targeted energy facilities, including South Pars, causing Iran to lose about a quarter of its daily gas production capacity.

Iran Warns Of Winter Gas Shortages

Although some of the lost production capacity has since been restored, Iran’s government has warned of potential gas shortages this winter.

Authorities have also urged citizens to reduce their consumption as the country continues to deal with pressure on its energy infrastructure.

The latest gas discovery could therefore provide a significant boost to Iran’s energy resources, although bringing the reserves into production is expected to take considerable time.
