‘Cannot Go Unanswered’: Iran Threatens Retaliation After Ukraine Attack Kills Sailor In Caspian Sea

Iran on Sunday threatened retaliation against Ukraine over what it said was an attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea that killed a sailor, with Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi warning that the incident “cannot go unanswered” and accusing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of acting “at Israel’s behest.”
In a post on X, Araghchi said Zelenskyy had “attacked an Iranian commercial vessel, killing a sailor,” calling it a “blatant UN Charter violation.”
“A blatant UN Charter violation done at Israel’s behest to drag Europe into its war,” Araghchi wrote.
He added that during separate calls with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, he had made it clear that “what the freeloader in Kyiv did CANNOT GO UNANSWERED.”
The latest remarks come a day after Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned what it described as a Ukrainian attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, saying the explosion killed one sailor and injured another.
Tehran described the incident as an act of aggression, summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires to lodge a formal protest and accused Kyiv of attempting to expand the war beyond Ukraine. According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, the Foreign Ministry termed the alleged attack “hostile and criminal” and said Iran would defend its national interests and security.
The diplomatic row comes against the backdrop of Iran’s military ties with Russia, which has relied extensively on Iranian-designed Shahed drones during its invasion of Ukraine. Kyiv has, in turn, offered its drone interception expertise to countries in the Middle East that have faced attacks involving Iranian weapons.
The Iranian condemnation coincided with fresh allegations from Zelenskyy, who claimed Russia has been sharing satellite intelligence with Iran to help it plan strikes across the Middle East.
The Ukrainian president said Kyiv had struck a Russian warship and vessels used to transport Iranian-linked military cargo in the Caspian Sea. He also claimed Ukraine had documented Russian satellite surveillance of military installations in Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait, alleging the imagery was later used by Iran to prepare and assess regional attacks.
The latest exchange marks a sharp escalation in tensions between Tehran and Kyiv, opening a new diplomatic front in a conflict already shaped by Iran’s military support for Russia and Ukraine’s efforts to disrupt Moscow’s supply chains.
