Rahul joined LSG for Rs 17 crore ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction and is the all-time leading run scorer for the franchise in IPL history.
Indian Premier League franchise Lucknow Super Giants is likely to retain captain KL Rahul ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. According to a report in Cricbuzz on Monday (August 26), Rahul, who joined the Lucknow-based franchise for Rs 17 crore ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, met LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka on Monday in the franchise’s Kolkata office.
The one-hour-long meeting between the two was reportedly centred around the team composition for the new season of the cash-rich league and the potential retention of Rahul. While there is no guarantee that LSG will retain Rahul, the fact that he was called on by the owner could be a pointer to it.
The BCCI hasn’t announced retention rules for the upcoming season of the cash-rich league, and any decision on player retention by the franchises is likely to be made after the announcement.
Rahul has led LSG in the last three editions of the IPL, but there were reports of him leaving the team after an animated chat with Goenka after the team’s 10-wicket loss against SRH in the IPL 2024 went viral.
Rahul was last seen in action for India during the second ODI against Sri Lanka, which was played at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batter will now take part in the Duleep Trophy 2024, which is set to start on September 5.
Rahul’s IPL career
Rahul made his IPL debut in 2013 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and then played in a couple of seasons (2014–2015) for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was signed by the Punjab Kings in the IPL 2018 mega auction, and he led them in the 2020 and 2021 editions of the world’s richest franchise cricket league. The right-handed batter from Bengaluru is the all-time leading run scorer in IPL history for PBKS and LSG.

Former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan is likely to join LSG as a mentor. According to Cricbuzz, Zaheer’s appointment is expected to be confirmed soon, and the former Delhi Capitals captain is likely to work alongside Justin Langer, who will continue in his role as head coach.
