A day after reports emerged about the death of 22-year-old Gujarat student Vidhi Kalpeshbhai Megha in Canada, her father, Kalpeshbhai Megha, alleged that she was fatally stabbed by a drug dealer in the Niagara region after refusing to hand over money.

Vidhi was killed in St Catharines on May 15, but her family was informed about the incident more than 10 days later.

Speaking to IANS, her father said that the drug dealer was demanding money from Vidhi. “She fought with him and refused to pay. He attacked her with a knife…I was informed that she had died. I sent an official email to my relatives,” he said.

“I received information from the police station yesterday. I sent an email to my relatives who are over there, and they initiated the necessary proceedings from that end… My daughter had gone there to study business management, and her 3-year course has been completed. She went on to pursue a PSW (Personal Support Worker) Honours course. My brother-in-law lives there, and her mother and father are also currently there,” her father said.

‘Send Her Body Back To India’: Father Requests Canadian Government

Her father and aunt also appealed to the Canadian government to send Vidhi’s body back to India to conduct her final rites, adding that it has been nearly 15 days since she died.

“My request to the government is that we must perform my daughter’s final rites right here in India; therefore, please provide me with the body as soon as possible and send it here,” Kalpeshbhai said.

Meanwhile, the aunt of Vidhi Megha, Snehal, said, “It has been almost 15 days now, and we have not been able to have a look at her body. I request the Government to complete the procedure as soon as possible and hand over her body to us. The government and the police there are not answering us properly. My brother is there and is in touch with everyone, but he is getting to know about things only through email. Nobody is cooperating there. I also urge the EAM to take quick action and hand over our Vidhi to us.”

Minister Solanki Visits Vidhi’s Family

Vidhi’s father further stated that Gujarat Cabinet Minister and BJP MLA from Borsad, Ramanbhai Solanki, visited him after the incident. “Our local MLA visited us just recently,” he said.

Speaking about the meeting, Minister Solanki said that he has spoken to both the Chief Minister’s Office and the Prime Minister’s Office and appealed to them to bring Vidhi’s dead body back to India as soon as possible.

“I learned only last night about the killing of Vidhi Mega, the daughter of our Borsad. This morning, I went to meet her family members. I empathised with their grief and anguish, offered them my condolences, and conveyed their demand to the government: that the daughter’s mortal remains be handed over to her family members as soon as possible. I have spoken with both the CMO and the PMO regarding this matter to ensure that her body is returned to her family members without any further delay. In this endeavour, I stand firmly with her family,” Solanki said.

Vidhi, who hailed from Gujarat’s Borsad town, had travelled to Canada for higher studies in business management and had recently completed the three-year programme. She later pursued a Personal Support Worker (PSW) Honours course.

The Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) said her killer, 40-year-old Joshua St Omer, was taken into custody on May 18 in connection with the case and has been charged with second-degree murder.
