Punjab’s batters combined effectively to establish a strong foundation, leading to a commanding 183-run victory over Madhya Pradesh and securing a spot in the Vijay Hazare Trophy semifinals on Tuesday.
Asked to bat first, Punjab benefited from captain Prabhsimran Singh’s 86-ball 88, Anmolpreet Singh’s 62-ball 70, Nehal Wadhera’s 56 off 38 deliveries, and Harnoor Singh’s 51 off 71 balls, posting an imposing total of 345 for six in the quarterfinal.
Later, Ramandeep Singh added a swift 24 off 15 balls, pushing Punjab close to the 350-mark.
In response, Madhya Pradesh were bowled out for 162 in 31.2 overs.
Tripuresh Singh (2/61 in 10 overs) and captain Venkatesh Iyer (2/60 in 7 overs) were the standout bowlers for Madhya Pradesh.
Vijay Hazare Trophy, Quarter-Final: Punjab Vs Madhya Pradesh – Highlights
Iyer’s decision to bowl first did not pay off as Punjab got off to a fantastic start with an opening partnership of 166 runs in just over 21 overs between Prabhsimran and Harnoor.
The pitch was favourable for batting, and both openers capitalised on the conditions, putting the Madhya Pradesh bowlers under pressure and laying the groundwork for a big total.
Aryan Pandey provided the first breakthrough, dismissing Harnoor in the 22nd over, but Anmolpreet maintained the momentum with his brisk scoring.
Prabhsimran, combining caution with aggression, seemed poised for a century alongside the fluent Anmolpreet. However, Kuldeep Sen ended Prabhsimran’s innings by getting him caught by Saransh Jain in the 30th over.
Naman Dhir managed a few boundaries before being dismissed for a 20-ball 23.
At 199 for three in the 36th over, Nehal Wadhera entered the scene. Wadhera’s presence transformed Punjab’s innings, adding 76 quick runs with Anmolpreet for the fourth wicket through quick running and frequent boundaries, keeping Madhya Pradesh on the defensive.
Unlike Punjab, Madhya Pradesh had a disastrous start, collapsing to 66 for five in the 17th over. When Rajat Patidar fell for a 40-ball 38 in the 27th over, with the total at 132 for seven, the match was virtually over.
Apart from Patidar, only Tripuresh Singh (31) managed to cross 30 runs in a disappointing batting performance for Madhya Pradesh. All-rounder Iyer, despite a strong tournament performance, failed to deliver in this knockout match.
Sanvir Singh (3/31 in 6 overs) was Punjab’s most successful bowler, with Gurnoor Brar, Krish Bhagat, and Ramandeep Singh each taking two wickets.
