Two police officers were injured in a shooting in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on Tuesday, authorities said. A suspect was killed during the incident, according to Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr.
The shooting occurred in the 100 block of North Florida Avenue, prompting a major police response. Aerial footage from the scene showed a heavy law enforcement presence as authorities secured the area and launched an investigation.
Further details about the condition of the injured officers and the circumstances leading to the shooting were not immediately available.
This was the second shooting incident in the US within 24 hours. Earlier, at least six people, including the suspect, were killed in a shooting spree at multiple locations across Iowa.
Authorities are investigating the fatal shootings of six people who they believe were killed by a relative who took his own life when confronted by police.
Why Is Gun Violence So Common In US?
The latest shooting in Atlantic City has once again drawn attention to America’s persistent gun violence problem.
The United States records far more gun-related deaths and mass shootings than most other developed countries. Experts attribute this to a combination of widespread firearm ownership, political divisions over gun control, and deeper social challenges.
The US has the highest rate of civilian gun ownership in the world, with an estimated 400 million firearms in private hands. Gun laws also vary significantly across states, allowing relatively easy access to weapons in many parts of the country.
Firearms occupy a unique place in American society due to the Second Amendment, which guarantees the right to bear arms. For many Americans, gun ownership is closely tied to personal freedom and self-defence, making efforts to tighten regulations politically contentious.
The issue has remained deeply polarising in US politics, with lawmakers often divided over solutions. While advocates call for stricter background checks, assault weapon restrictions and safe-storage laws, opponents argue that such measures infringe upon constitutional rights.
As shootings continue to occur across the country, experts say addressing gun violence will require a broader approach that combines firearm regulation, mental health support, community investment and violence-prevention programmes.
