Sometimes, a film finds its audience a little late and on a different screen. Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur finally caught up with Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar after it dropped on Netflix and had plenty to say, along with a candid reason for missing it in theatres.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Kapur shared his thoughts on Aditya Dhar’s action thriller, praising both the film and its makers. He wrote, “Finally saw #Dhurandhar on Netflix. Terrific storytelling and very high level of performances even from minor roles. Director #AdityaDhar deserves all the praise he’s getting. Congratulations producer #jyotideshpande and looking forward to #Dhurandhar2.”
The filmmaker also engaged with fans in the comment section. Responding to a viewer who felt the film successfully balanced a complete story while setting up a sequel, Kapur replied with a simple “Agree.” When another user asked whether the Netflix version felt censored, Kapur clarified, “It did not feel censored except for swear words .. but it was obvious what the characters were saying.”
Several users were curious why Kapur had skipped the theatrical release back in December. Addressing this, he explained, “I wish I had .. but it want available in theatres where I am.” He further added, “I am in Dubai where it did not release.” When asked if he plans to watch Dhurandhar 2 on the big screen, Kapur responded, “If it releases where I am.” Notably, Dhurandhar was banned in six Gulf countries, including Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE.
Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar features Ranveer Singh as Indian spy Hamza Ali Mazari, also known as Jaskirat Singh Rangi. The film follows his mission into Pakistan’s Lyari area to infiltrate a Baloch gang. The ensemble cast includes Sara Arjun, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R Madhavan and Rakesh Bedi.
The film emerged as a massive box-office success, earning over ₹1328 crore worldwide. The sequel, Dhurandhar 2, is slated for a theatrical release on March 19.
