With the midterm elections less than three months away and the Trump administration looking for a way to tell the American public that the US has won the war with Iran, Donald Trump floated the idea of walking away from negotiations without a nuclear deal, US officials told The Wall Street Journal.

The recent chaos and U-turns in the negotiations have also signalled that Tehran is prepared for a “long and grinding conflict”, according to the report.

Iran on Saturday demanded billions of dollars in US payments, the removal of American troops from the region and an end to the US naval blockade as prerequisites for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The demands have complicated Trump’s efforts to find an exit from the conflict, with the US seeking the resumption of free traffic through the strategically important waterway.

According to the report, intermittent Iranian missile and drone attacks have allowed Tehran to disrupt traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, with the uncertainty around the waterway also rattling global oil markets.
