US President Donald Trump on Sunday signalled that Washington was weighing its next move in the conflict with Iran, saying he was in “deciding mode” and warning that “very big things” could happen soon.

His remarks came as Tehran said it had passed a set of demands to the US through Qatar, which has been acting as a mediator between the two sides. Iran has linked any fresh negotiations to conditions including an end to the fighting and the lifting of the naval blockade.

Trump, speaking in a reported conversation with Fox News, said the US had several choices in dealing with Iran. He referred to three possible paths, “wiping Iran out”, allowing the Iranian economy to “rot”, or reaching a negotiated settlement.

He also issued a warning to Tehran, saying, “My question is, if and when do I blow the entire nation up? They had better behave.”

Trump Says He Could Meet Iran President

The US president also commented on Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s expected trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

Asked whether he would meet Pezeshkian during the visit, Trump said he would “probably be open” to holding talks with him. Pezeshkian is expected to travel to the US with a senior Iranian delegation and hold meetings with other world leaders on the sidelines of the UN session, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

Trump also spoke about Yemen’s Houthi rebels, saying Washington was still in contact with the group after recent ballistic missile attacks targeting Saudi Arabia. He said the Houthis had agreed not to target US personnel.

Iran Sends Demands Through Qatar

Iranian officials said Tehran had communicated seven conditions to Washington for the resumption of negotiations.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s top negotiator, confirmed on Sunday that the conditions had been conveyed. Mohsen Rezaei, who heads Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, had said a day earlier that Qatar had passed Iran’s demands to the US.

Rezaei told Al Jazeera that Tehran’s demands included an end to the war on all fronts, the return of frozen Iranian funds and the lifting of the naval blockade.

Iran Warns US Allies

At the same time, Iran’s central military command claimed it had received intelligence indicating that the US was preparing for another military operation against Tehran, allegedly with the backing of several countries in the region.

The Iranian military warned countries supporting Washington that they could be treated as parties to what it called “mischief”. It also said those countries should not expect restraint from Iran’s armed forces.
