US Israel Iran War News, Khamenei funeral Live Updates: The funeral ceremony of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei began in Tehran on Friday, July 3, as mourners gathered at the Grand Mosalla religious complex in the capital to bid a final farewell to their slain leader.
Top Iranian officials –– President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf –– appeared emotional as they assembled at the complex.
On Friday, the coffin carrying Khamenei arrived at Grand Mosalla, with the casket draped in the colours of the Iranian flag. Khamenei was killed on February 28 in joint US-Israeli strikes, that triggered a massive conflict in the region.
Heavy Footfall Expected, High Alert
According to Iranian authorities, an estimated 15 to 20 million people are expected to gather for the farewell ceremony of the country’s slain leader. Heavy security measures have been put in place nationwide, especially in and around the capital of Tehran.
On Friday, foreign dignitaries landed in Tehran to pay their final respects to Khamenei. Public holidays have been declared in the capital, along with Qom and Mashhad, where the later stages of the funeral event will take place.
