Indian wrestler Vishvajit Ramchandra More made history at the U23 World Championships, becoming the country’s first wrestler to secure a silver medal in the Greco-Roman discipline. Competing in the men’s 55kg final, More narrowly missed out on gold after Georgia’s Koba Karumidze edged him 13-12 in the closing seconds of the bout.
The two-time U23 World Championships bronze medallist had already achieved a landmark feat on Tuesday by becoming India’s first-ever Greco-Roman finalist at the competition.
He also holds the distinction of being the only Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to have won two medals at the U23 Worlds.
More began his campaign with a hard-fought 10-8 victory over Mexico’s Isaac Marin Mata, earning a place in the quarterfinals against Iran’s Armin Shamsipour, the reigning U20 world champion. A four-point throw proved decisive against Shamsipour, who appeared to suffer a shoulder injury, as More secured an 8-1 win.
The Indian continued his impressive run in the semifinals, overcoming Russia’s Malik Gigiev 6-4 in another closely contested encounter. Challenges played a role in the bout, with both wrestlers benefiting from them during the contest.
Having reached the final, More had the opportunity to become the first Indian to win Greco-Roman gold at the U23 World Championships. However, Karumidze denied him that historic achievement after surviving a challenging semifinal against Kyrgyzstan’s Barsbek Asankozhoev to book his place in the title clash.
India’s overall campaign had also suffered a setback before the competition, with nine U23 wrestlers from the Greco-Roman and women’s wrestling categories being denied visas for the 2026 U23 World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas. The stated grounds for rejection were that the wrestlers were under-20 and did not hold full-time jobs.
Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Sanjay Singh criticised the decision.
“The US Embassy rejected the visas of nine Indian wrestlers on the grounds that they are unemployed. For the first time in history this has happened. Even the UWW president wrote to them regarding the matter. This visa refusal is entirely the US Embassy’s fault, and as a result, India lost out on gold medals. Among the nine wrestlers denied visas, at least two were strong gold medal prospects. India suffered a major medal loss due to the US Embassy’s fault,” WFI chief Sanjay Singh told news agency IANS.
