NEW DELHI: Campaigning heavily on the “anti-hatred” plank for the last two years, Congress in its manifesto has followed up with bold enunciations on safety and welfare of minorities starting with a general declaration that it will “uphold the fundamental right to practise one’s faith and rights guaranteed to religious minorities” under the Constitution.
It has also vowed to “put down with a firm hand” hate speeches, hate crimes and communal conflicts.
Congress said it will encourage reform of personal laws, but the process must have participation and consent of the communities concerned – the bid to comfort minorities appearing linked to the debate that BJP has triggered with the promise of a Uniform Civil Code in state elections.
The party slammed extra judicial “mob lynching” and police encounter killings, which are viewed as a source of intimidation for Muslims. It said the culprits will be punished as per law.
Crucially, Congress said it will put a stop on “bulldozer justice”, a reference to the new norm adopted in the BJP-governed states where houses and establishments related to perceived accused are demolished without judicial trial or establishment of culpability. The extra-judicial measure has triggered controversies since it started in Uttar Pradesh and has spread to other states like Madhya Pradesh.
With the manifesto declaration of an omnibus “freedom from fear”, Congress said “it will not interfere with personal choices of food and dress, to love and marry”, and will repeal all laws that unreasonably interfere with personal freedoms.
