Mumbai teen (16) youngest Indian to scale Everest | India News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Kaamya Karthikeyan, a 16-year-old class XII student at Navy Children School in Mumbai, along with her father Commodore S Karthikeyan from the Indian Navy, reached the summit of Mount Everest (8,849 metres) on Monday. The teen had started the expedition to climb Mount Everest with her father on April 3.
On Thursday, the Western Naval Command (@IN_WNC) tweeted about their achievement.The tweet said that after the feat, she had become the second youngest girl in the world and the youngest Indian mountaineer to summit the world’s highest peak from the Nepal side. The Western Naval Command has reported that Kaamya has achieved six milestones in her journey to reach the highest peak on each of the seven continents.

Kaamya Karthikeyan is now planning to climb Mount Vinson Massif in Antarctica this December with the goal of becoming the youngest girl to complete the Seven Summits challenge.
A spokesperson from defence mentioned that Kaamya, being the youngest Indian, has achieved the feat of climbing the highest peaks on six continents. In 2020 she earned the title of the youngest girl globally to conquer Mount Aconcagua, which stands as the highest peak in South America and beyond Asia. “Kaamya has exhibited immense courage and fortitude in summiting the highest peaks in six of the seven continents,” said the spokesperson.
Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) supported her endeavour. “We are incredibly proud of Kaamya’s extraordinary achievement of summiting Mt Everest at such a young age. Her journey is a testament to the spirit of perseverance, meticulous preparation, and unwavering determination,” a statement released by TSAF chairman Chanakya Chaudhary said. The statement said she is an inspiration to young adventurers everywhere, proving that with dedication and the right support, even the most ambitious dreams can be realised.
Kaamya was a recipient of Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Shakti Puraskar, an award given to children for their exceptional achievement. TSAF said Kaamya, along with her team, reached Kathmandu on April 3. After acclimatisation and days of planning, her final summit climb began from Everest Base Camp and the final push began in the early morning of May 20.
Her Himalayan journey started at the age of seven with a high-altitude trek to Chandrashila Peak (12,000-ft) in 2015. The following year, she tackled tougher treks like Har ki Dun (13,500-ft), Kedarkantha Peak (13,500-ft), and Roopkund Lake (16,400-ft). In May 2017, she trekked to Everest Base Camp (17,600-ft) in Nepal, becoming the second youngest girl to achieve this. In May 2019, she trekked to Brighu Lake (14,100-ft) and crossed Sar Pass (13,850-ft) in Himachal Pradesh, the TSAF statement said.
