AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat assembly on Friday will discuss a private member’s motion, moved by BJP MLA Vipul Patel of Sojitra, seeking a recommendation to the Centre for action against the BBC, which had aired a documentary questioning the actions during the 2002 Gujarat riots of then CM and now PM Narendra Modi.
The motion said an attempt was made to malign the then Gujarat government. Patel’s proposal states that an inquiry commission was formed with Justice K G Shah and retired Justice G T Nanavati as its chairman.
The commission’s report concluded that the burning of S-6 coach in Godhra was pre-planned and the riots which broke out after that was spontaneous. It found no role of the government, religious institutions or political parties in the riots. The Supreme Court also ruled out negligence on the part of the state government, the proposal states.
The proposal states that the documentary was aired recently, with an ulterior motive, to malign the image of PM Modi at the international level.
