Just 2 days ago, the God of Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar had tweeted praises about Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao’s film Laapataa Ladies. Taking to X ( former Twitter), he wrote, “A big-hearted fable set in small-town India that speaks to one at so many levels. I loved @LaapataaLadies for its delightful story, powerhouse performances and the subtlety with which it delivered important social messages so cleverly, without overt preaching.A must-watch for everyone, and trust me, you will laugh, cry and rejoice with the characters as they find their destinies in the movie. A big congratulations to my friends Kiran Rao & Aamir Khan!”
The film also had a fabulous weekend, where it collected about Rs 2.7 crore with Rs 60 lakhs on Friday, Rs 95 lakhs on Saturday, and Rs 1.15 crore on Sunday. But on Monday, the film crashed badly to collect just Rs 21 lakhs as per industry tracker Sacnilk – a drop of near 80%. The total collection of the film now stands at Rs 8.96 crore of which Rs 6.05 crore came in its first week.
Laapataa Ladies is Kiran Rao’s second film, her first film Dhobi Ghat released 12 years ago. The talented director had too much on her plate over these years from her NGO- Paani foundation, to the birth of her son Azad and raising him and her divorce with Aamir Khan.
The film stars new talents like Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and experienced names like Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan. The makers had undertaken an extensive, yet offbeat kind of promotion of the film, where it was shown to college students and in smaller cities before the release of the film.
Laapataa Ladies was Aamir’s first production since the disaster of Laal Singh Chadha, and he now has multiple projects under his belt, one being his son Junaid’s film with Sai Pallavi, directed by Siddharth P Malhotra and other being Lahore: 1947 with Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta and Rajkumar Santoshi.
