Nick Kyrgios has expressed his intent to compete at next year’s Australian Open by enrolling in the Kooyong Classic warm-up exhibition event.
The maverick 30-year-old Aussie has been plagued by severe injuries over the past few years, limiting him to only five singles matches in the 2025 season, the last of which was at the Miami Open in March.
Currently ranked 666th in the world and lacking a protected ranking, Kyrgios will require wildcards to participate in any ATP warm-up tournaments leading up to the Australian Open, as well as the Grand Slam tournament itself.
These wildcards are likely to be granted if requested, given Kyrgios’s status as a former champion at the Brisbane International and his popularity with the crowd at Melbourne Park.
Kyrgios has already scheduled other exhibition matches before the end of this year, including his “battle of the sexes” match against Aryna Sabalenka in Dubai on Dec. 28.
Next year’s Kooyong Classic will feature a strong Italian presence, with Davis Cup heroes Flavio Cobolli and Matteo Berrettini, along with world number eight Lorenzo Musetti confirmed in the men’s field.
The exhibition tournament, which did not occur this year due to operational issues, will take place from January 13 to 15, three days before the Grand Slam season starts a few kilometres up the Yarra River at Melbourne Park.
