“Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding,” they said in a statement posted on Instagram. They argued that the celebrations were part of an already planned weekend with friends and were not part of the wedding ceremony.

Umar Kremlev is a Russian businessman with close links to the Russian establishment. Umar Kremlev was also awarded the Order of Friendship, a high-level Russian state honour, by Vladimir Putin in April. The concern is that a foreign actor could provide valuable gifts and potentially seek access, influence or favourable treatment in return. The gift itself has not been described as illegal.
What Donald Trump Jr. Said About Umar Kremlev?
Donald Trump Jr. and his wife described Umar Kremlev as a friend and said there was nothing political about his involvement. A spokesman for Trump Jr. said the two men are not business partners and met through a mutual friend. According to the spokesman, they bonded over their shared interests in boxing and hunting.
Umar Kremlev’s press office similarly described the relationship as a friendship and said the two men first met “a couple of years ago”. His office also said Umar Kremlev had never discussed political matters with Trump Jr. or other American friends and acquaintances.

US President Donald Trump said he did not know Umar Kremlev and had never heard of him. Asked whether he knew that Umar Kremlev had helped pay for the celebrations, Trump said he had “no idea who Umar is”. He also rejected the suggestion that Umar Kremlev had paid for his son’s wedding. Trump said the wedding took place at a different location and on a different day, describing the Bahamas event as an “after-party” held in his son’s honour.
“Not a big deal!” the US President said. Trump did not attend either the wedding or the after-party.

Umar Kremlev is the president of the International Boxing Association, the governing body that has been at the centre of disputes with the International Olympic Committee. The organisation has faced scrutiny over its governance and its financial links to Russia. Gazprom, the Russian state-owned energy giant, has backed the association.
Umar Kremlev also has a direct relationship with Putin. The Russian President presented him with the Order of Friendship in April. Days before Trump Jr.’s wedding in May, Putin and Umar Kremlev were also seen together in China.
