The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has cleared a Capital Investment Plan (CIP) with a total outlay of ₹6,478.41 crore for the 2026-27 fiscal. This includes an outlay of ₹848.79 crore for power generation, ₹1,175.48 crore for transmission and ₹1,669 crore for the power distribution side.

The KSEB has earmarked ₹100 crore for the implementation of smart meters, ₹17 crore for the preparation of detailed project reports for pumped storage projects (PSP), ₹170 crore for battery energy storage systems (BESS) and ₹52 crore for electric vehicle charging stations. The KSEB is eyeing the PSPs and BESS for addressing the challenge of storing the excess renewable energy produced during the daytime from solar and other sources.

With respect to hydropower generation, the power utility has earmarked ₹20 crore for the Maripuzha hydroelectric scheme and ₹10 crore for the Poringalkuthu small hydroelectric power project Stage II. Both these projects are expected to commence shortly, according to a December 16 order clearing the annual plan for 2026-27. In the coming fiscal, the KSEB is planning to spend ₹419.36 crore on ongoing hydroelectric schemes.

Renewable energy projects

Further, ₹3.60 crore has been set apart for other renewable energy projects covering solar and wind projects under various schemes.

Projects envisaged with State support would be executed only after funds are sanctioned and released by the Kerala government, the order noted.

On the transmission side, the KSEB will spend ₹463.83 crore on normal works related to power transmission. ₹598.75 crore has been earmarked for TransGrid 2.0, an ongoing scheme aimed at strengthening the power transmission network within Kerala.

For strengthening the State’s power distribution network, the KSEB has earmarked ₹127 crore for the ‘Dyuthi’ scheme.

The KSEB director board has also cleared a revised plan for 2025-26 with an outlay of ₹4,789.75 crore.
