Houses, shops hit by mudslides in J&K’s Doda after cloudburst, torrential rains

Torrential rains triggered flash floods and mudslides in the Chenab Valley’s Doda district on Tuesday morning, ` damaging houses and shops.
An official said the flash floods and mudslides hit Thathri town following a cloudburst. Scores of houses, shops, and vehicles were submerged and many were buried under the debris.

Officials said civil infrastructure was also damaged due to boulders and mud. Several vehicles were washed away. Vehicular traffic was also hit because of the closure of the Doda-Kishtwar National Highway at a number of locations.
No casualties
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha reviewed the situation following the cloudburst. A Lok Bhavan spokesman said Mr. Sinha had directed the district administration to provide immediate relief to the affected families and speed up restoration work.

Mr. Sinha also spoke to the Doda Deputy Commissioner and assessed the situation. “Several houses and shops have suffered damage. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported,” he said. “I have directed the DC to ensure immediate relief and assistance to the affected families and expedite restoration work, including the clearance of NH-244,” he added.
