US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that he won the 2020 presidential election, alleging that more than 24,000 noncitizens illegally voted in the election.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump said an ongoing review of voter and citizenship records had uncovered the votes and claimed the figure would rise as more records are examined.

“The Census Bureau has begun checking the Voter Records from 2020 against their Citizenship Records,” Trump wrote.

“On the first 128,000,000 Voters, the Census Bureau proves that over 24,000 Noncitizens voted illegally!”

Trump said the US Census Bureau would examine another 32 million voter records and predicted that the number of alleged illegal votes would increase substantially.

“The Census Bureau is going to analyse the next 32,000,000 Voters, and this number will explode,” he said.

He then renewed his long-standing claim about the 2020 election, writing in capital letters: “I WON THE ELECTION!” Trump also used the post to again urge Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, legislation backed by his administration that seeks stricter requirements for voter registration and voting in federal elections.

Trump’s latest remarks came amid his campaign for tighter election rules in the US.

The Washington Post reported on August 18 that Trump was using the claimed figure of 24,000 illegal votes to revive his allegations that the 2020 election was rigged against him.

The report noted that even if the figure cited by Trump were accepted at face value, it would represent less than two-hundredths of a per cent of the total votes cast and would not establish that Trump won the election.

Joe Biden defeated Trump in the 2020 presidential election by more than seven million votes nationally.

The Washington Post also pointed out that establishing that illegal votes were cast would not by itself overturn the election result; it would have to be shown that enough such votes were cast for Biden in the specific states that determined the Electoral College outcome.

SAVE America Act At Centre Of Trump’s Push

Trump concluded his Truth Social post by calling for passage of the SAVE America Act, writing, “We must pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

The legislation would require people registering to vote in federal elections to provide documentary proof of US citizenship.

It also proposes requiring voters to present valid photo identification at polling stations and directing states to identify and remove noncitizens from voter rolls.

The Republican-led House passed a revised version of the legislation in February by a 218-213 vote, with one Democrat joining Republicans. An earlier version, known as the SAVE Act, had cleared the House in April but stalled in the Senate.

Republicans have argued that the legislation is necessary to strengthen election security and ensure that only US citizens vote in federal elections.

Democrats, however, have argued that the requirements could make voting more difficult for eligible citizens who face challenges obtaining citizenship documents or government-issued identification.

Trump Had Invoked India’s Voter ID System

Trump’s latest post followed his remarks on August 18 praising India’s electoral system as a model for the US.

Trump said India’s Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar had asked his administration how elections could be conducted in the US without a nationwide photo identification requirement.

“India’s last Election had 646,000,000 Voters! Less than 1% voted by mail, and every single Voter had to have a VALID Photo Identity Document. We need to pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT, now!” Trump said in that post.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor also backed Trump’s comments, saying that India’s 646 million voters were required to have identification and that Congress should pass the SAVE America Act.
