Nine people, including a child, were killed after a massive fire ripped through a hotel on Free School Street in central Kolkata, located right next to the local fire station.
Nine people, including a kid, lost their lives after falling unconscious and suffocating from dense smoke in their sleep, while several others were rushed to the hospital in critical condition, an official told CNN-News18.
Preliminary reports suggest the fire was triggered by a short circuit or an Air Conditioning unit explosion. At present, fire tenders along with disaster management teams are deployed to curb the blaze and bring the situation under control.
A video, captured by CNN-News18, showed panic-stricken locals gathered at the spot to assess the damage and extend assistance to those in need.
The clip also captured the extent of damage caused to the hotel premises, with the building suffering extensive structural harm.
At present, disaster management teams are deployed at the site as relief operations continue.
