Visuals of a motorist crumpling as a tree crashed down on him in Andheri surfaced on Tuesday, as bystanders rushed to pull him free from beneath the fallen branches. The injured man was later moved to safety amid Mumbai’s relentless downpour, even as the western suburb grappled with a separate flooding crisis just kilometres away.

Barely 15 minutes of rainfall was enough to submerge the Andheri Subway, forcing traffic police to suspend movement through the underpass entirely. The rapid waterlogging has reignited criticism of BMC’s pre-monsoon desilting claims, with residents alleging nearly 70% of Mogra nullah cleanup remains unfinished and smaller drains left untouched.

Why Is Mogra Nullah Overflow A Recurring Flashpoint?

This isn’t the first time flooding has paralysed Andheri’s road network this week. Days earlier on Saturday, the BMC had shut multiple roads after Mogra Nallah overflowed under sustained rainfall, with smaller drains feeding into the nullah system also running over capacity.

The Andheri subway was closed then too, alongside vehicle movement halted in Sakinaka, Chandivali and Vile Parle due to submerged roads.

Police had cordoned off waterlogged stretches in Chembur, Andheri and Vikhroli, urging motorists toward alternate routes — the same appeal repeated Tuesday, underscoring that Saturday’s disruption was far from a one-off.

What Does Today’s Forecast And Tide Pattern Suggest For Mumbai?

The India Meteorological Department’s 0800 hrs bulletin points to continued disruption, with generally cloudy skies and intermittent light to moderate rain expected across the city and suburbs through the day.

Adding to flood risk, Mumbai’s high tide is forecast to peak at 3.77 metres at 1717 hrs — a level that could compound waterlogging if it coincides with active rainfall, echoing the pattern that submerged Andheri Subway earlier in the day.

Rainfall data for the 24 hours ending 0800 hrs Tuesday shows the eastern suburbs bore the brunt, recording 86.66 mm, closely followed by the western suburbs at 86.90 mm, while the city area logged a comparatively lower 61.13 mm.
