Exclusive interview with the author

Q: What Inspired You To Write This Book?

A: Fourteen years of sitting across the table from Indian investors, and the same blind spot kept showing up — every single time. Clients with disciplined SIP habits, well-thought-out domestic portfolios, genuine financial intelligence — and yet 100% of their wealth sitting in 2% of the world. Not because they had researched global markets and consciously chosen India. But because nobody had ever shown them the alternative. Going Global was born from that gap. I wanted to write the book I wished I could have handed every one of those clients on day one of our relationship.

Q: Can You Tell Us About The Book?

A: Going Global is India’s first practical, step-by-step guide to international investing for Indian investors. It covers the complete journey — from understanding why going global matters, to the four routes available to Indian investors under the RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme, to the tax mechanics (capital gains, TCS, DTAA, Schedule FA compliance), to five ready-to-use model portfolios, to real investor case studies drawn from 14 years of practice. It is not a theoretical book about why diversification works. It is a hands-on manual for how to actually do it — legally, compliantly, and cost-effectively — from India.

Q: How Long Does It Take You To Write A Book?

A: Going Global took approximately one year from the first outline to the final approved manuscript. The research, data verification, and regulatory accuracy checks took far longer than the actual writing. A book on financial compliance — covering tax laws, RBI regulations, SEBI guidelines, and DTAA provisions — cannot afford to be approximate. Every figure, every form reference, every regulatory threshold had to be verified against current sources. I would say 20% of the time was writing and 80% was ensuring everything was accurate enough to stake my professional reputation on.

Q: How Many Books Have You Written? Which Is Your Favourite?

A: Going Global is my third book. My first was The Unlisted Bible — a guide to investing in unlisted and pre-IPO equity in India. My second was The Index Revolution — making the case for low-cost passive index investing for Indian investors. Going Global is my favourite — not because it is the most recent, but because it addresses a problem I have watched Indian investors struggle with for over a decade, and because the solution it offers is genuinely accessible to anyone willing to take the first step.

Q: What Does Success Mean To You? What Is The Definition Of Success?

A: For this book specifically, success is not measured in copies sold. Success is the CA in Pune who reads Chapter 37 and finally understands how to file Schedule FA correctly for a client with US holdings. It is the 32-year-old software engineer in Bengaluru who reads Chapter 4 and makes her first LRS remittance with confidence instead of anxiety. It is the retired investor in Coimbatore who realises — perhaps for the first time — that his portfolio’s concentration in India is a risk he never consciously chose to take, and who now has a framework to address it. If this book changes the financial trajectory of even a few hundred Indian investors, that is success.

Q: What Advice Would You Give To Aspiring Authors?

A: Write the book only you can write. There are thousands of books on investing. There are very few books written by a practising fee-only SEBI-registered adviser who has sat across the table from real Indian investors for 14 years and watched the same mistakes repeat. Your specific experience, your specific perspective, your specific failures and corrections — that is what makes a book irreplaceable. Do not write what you think people want to read. Write what you know to be true, in the clearest language you can find. Clarity is the hardest skill in non-fiction writing, and it is the one that matters most.
