US-Iran War Updates: The planned meeting between Iran and Gulf states in Oman to discuss the Strait of Hormuz has been postponed in the “interests of consensus”, Oman said. An Iranian foreign ministry official said the postponement was made at the request of some regional countries and followed a joint decision by Tehran and Muscat.
The meeting, which had been expected to take place on Monday, was seen as an opportunity to discuss the future of the strategically important waterway amid heightened tensions in the region. However, an Iranian official had earlier said the talks were not expected to result in a signed agreement on reopening the Strait.
Iran has been negotiating with Oman over arrangements for transport through the strait, including Tehran’s demand to collect fees from ships using the waterway, a proposal Oman has rejected.
The developments come as fighting has intensified in Yemen, with government forces carrying out air attacks on Houthi positions near al-Makha (Mocha), days after the Iran-aligned group captured the strategic port city.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a major global concern as around a fifth of global oil supplies transited the waterway before the conflict. Oil prices have surged amid attacks on tankers and growing regional tensions.
