The Ministry of External Affairs on Saturday summoned the Pakistani Chargé d’Affaires to lodge a strong protest over the continued facilitation of illegal cross-border infiltration from Pakistan, a day after two suspected Pakistani intruders were shot dead by Border Security Force (BSF) jawans near the International Border in Punjab.
BSF troops on Friday shot dead two suspected Pakistani intruders along the international border in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district after they failed to heed repeated warnings to turn back. According to a BSF sentry, the two men were also provoking the troops and saying they wanted to enter Indian territory.
India informed the Pakistani side that three individuals had infiltrated Indian territory and continued to move towards the border fence despite repeated warnings by the BSF. The Indian forces were compelled to engage them for posing an imminent security threat.
The MEA noted that this incident highlighted a clear pattern of repeated cross-border movement by armed narcotics syndicates operating from Pakistan and urged Islamabad to investigate the cases of infiltration, drug smuggling activities and the complicity of Pakistan’s border forces, and take remedial measures.
India Rejects Pakistan’s Civilian Claim
India also rejected “baseless and motivated” allegations by Pakistan after the latter claimed the two intruders were civilians who inadvertently crossed the international border.
“Pakistan was further urged to ensure respect for the sanctity of the International Border, strictly observe relevant bilateral arrangements, mandate its forces to exercise effective control to prevent unauthorised movement from its side, and take definitive measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents,” said the MEA.
