India shines at Commonwealth Games: Putul Sonowal wins in Lawn Bowls, medal hopes in boxing, para powerlifting, gymnastics, swimming.

Star Indian bowler Putul Sonowal pulled off a brilliant tie-break win against 2023 world champion Ryan Bester of Canada in the men’s singles, giving India a winning start to their Glasgow Commonwealth Games campaign on Thursday.
Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh also won their Women’s Pairs opening match against Malta in a tie-break as Lawn Bowls competition kicked off the Games.
India’s schedule at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on July 24 spans six sports and offers the contingent its first medal chances of the competition. The boxing campaign gets underway as well, with Jadumani Singh taking on Scotland’s Aaron Cullen in the men’s 55kg round-of-32 bout at the Scottish Event Campus.
Olympian Srihari Nataraj will be in action in the pool as well, competing in Heat 4 of the men’s 50m backstroke at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre. If he qualifies, he will return for the semifinals after midnight.
Seven Indian lifters will compete in the para powerlifting finals at the SEC Armadillo, handing India its first medal chances of the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Ashok and Parmjeet Kumar will kick off the campaign in the men’s lightweight category, followed by Jaspreet Kaur and Suman Devi in the women’s lightweight, while Kasthuri Rajamani will feature in the women’s heavyweight event.
Sudhir and Jhandu Kumar will round off India’s para powerlifting campaign in the men’s heavyweight category after midnight.
Earlier in the day, India’s four-member artistic gymnastics team of Tapan Mohanty, Swathish KP, Tapeshwarnath Das and Yogeshwar Singh will start their qualification campaign at the Glasgow International Arena.
The quartet will be in medal contention later in the day as well, with the men’s team final scheduled after the qualification round.
Meanwhile, para swimmers Ravi Budigna and Imam Ali will compete in the heats of the men’s S13 100m freestyle in the afternoon, with the final all set to take place around midnight if they progress.
In bowls, Sonowal returns to the Scottish Event Campus for his men’s singles sectional-play clash against Cecil Alexander of the Falkland Islands. The Indian heads into the contest brimming with confidence after stunning Bester in his opening match on Thursday.
In the women’s pairs, Pinki and Rupa, members of India’s gold medal-winning fours team at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, will take on South Africa in their second sectional match.
