Amid security restrictions and a clampdown, Jammu and Kashmir for the third consecutive days on Tuesday (March 3, 2026) witnessed street protests and security restrictions over the killing of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei in a U.S.-Israel attack in Iran. Meanwhile, protests were also reported from the Chenab Valley and the Pir Panjal valley in the Jammu division.

Security has been tightened in Srinagar and many roads in sensitive locations have been closed with concertina wires and vehicles. Mobile internet has also been slowed down “as a precautionary measure”. The J&K Police appealed to all the sections of society “to exercise restraint and refrain from violence and provocation”. “The police will take strict legal action against instigators and miscreants involved in unlawful activities,” the J&K Police said.
The J&K Police also lodged a First Information Report (FIR) over “deliberate circulation of false, fabricated and misleading information by certain news channels, media outlets, and individuals across electronic and social media platforms”. “Such malicious misinformation campaigns pose a grave threat to peace, security, and the integrity of the nation,” the police said.
The police said “some prominent individuals are reportedly making attempts to provoke activities that may disturb peace and public order”. “All such actions are under close watch, and necessary measures are being taken,” it warned.
Ruling National Conference (NC) leader and legislator appealed to youngsters to “stay indoors”. “If the law-and-order situation advises people not to come out on the roads, please adhere to it. The repercussions are not temporary; they are borne by parents and families for a long time. I have received numerous calls about young boys being detained, and parents crying in distress,” Mr. Sadiq said.
Meanwhile, the protest site at Srinagar’s Lal Chowk remained out of bounds for locals. However, fresh street protests were reported from parts of north and central Kashmir, including Budgam’s Magam and Bandipora’s Sumbal area. Hundreds of protesters carried the images of slain Khamenei and raised anti-U.S. and anti-Israel slogans. A shutdown was also observed in the Pir Panjal valley’s Poonch and Rajouri districts. Street protests were also held in the Chenab Valley’s Kishtwar and Doda districts.
Meanwhile, former J&K chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti said there were “worrying reports of women protestors detained across Kashmir for expressing solidarity over the martyrdom of Khamenei”.
“I urge the J&K Director General of Police (DGP) to issue immediate orders for their release. This is a time of mourning for us and the situation must be handled with compassion and sensitivity,” Ms. Mufti said.
Meanwhile, Ms. Mufti said it was deeply disturbing that the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) “stands as a mute spectator while America and Israel commit blatant aggression against the sovereignty of Iran”.
“The OIC’s silence on the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader, and its attempt to shift blame onto Iran, is not only alarming but disgraceful. Instead of condemning this brazen attack on Iran, it has chosen silence, covertly endorsing the actions of the Epstein gang. This represents a grave betrayal of the collective conscience and interests of the Muslim Ummah,” Ms. Mufti said.
